Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a Navratna defense PSU, has received an order worth ₹2,210 crore (before taxes) from the Ministry of Defence. The contract involves supplying advanced Electronic Warfare (EW) systems for Mi-17 V5 helicopters operated by the Indian Air Force.

The EW systems have been completely designed and developed in India by DRDO’s Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS). BEL will handle the manufacturing process. This order highlights the growing capabilities of India’s domestic defense sector.

Key Components of the EW Suite
The electronic warfare package includes three critical systems:

1. Radar Warning Receiver (RWR): Detects enemy radar signals

2. Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS): Alerts pilots about incoming missiles

3. Countermeasure Dispensing System (CMDS): Deploys defensive flares/chaff to evade threats

    Operational Benefits
These systems will improve the survivability of IAF helicopters during combat missions. The integrated EW suite provides comprehensive protection against modern battlefield threats, enhancing mission success rates.

The order reinforces BEL’s position as a key player in India’s defense electronics sector. It also demonstrates the successful collaboration between DRDO (research) and BEL (production) in developing military technology.
