The Adani Group has decided to step back from the private telecom space. Its unit, Adani Data Networks, is selling 400 MHz of 26 GHz spectrum to Bharti Airtel. This spectrum was originally bought in the 2022 auction for use in private 5G networks.

The sale covers six telecom circles—Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Mumbai, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan. These are key regions where Airtel already has a strong presence and has been expanding its 5G services.

While the Adani Group has not revealed the deal amount, the move signals a clear shift in its strategy. Instead of competing in the telecom sector, Adani will now focus more on its core businesses like energy, infrastructure, and digital platforms. This decision aligns with the group’s long-term plans to invest in sustainable energy and public infrastructure.

For Airtel, this deal is a chance to boost its spectrum holding in the 26 GHz band, which is important for delivering high-speed 5G services. As of December 2024, Airtel had around 120 million 5G users, out of its 414 million total mobile customers.

The acquisition will help Airtel improve its 5G reach and network quality in busy urban areas, where high-speed and low-latency connectivity are in demand.

The sale also highlights a trend in the Indian telecom space, where companies are making more targeted moves to stay competitive and focused. Adani’s exit shows that it prefers to use digital tools in its own businesses rather than operate a full-fledged telecom service.

While the financial details remain confidential, the move benefits both companies: Adani can redirect its capital and energy to other ventures, and Airtel can strengthen its position in the growing 5G market.
