India’s defence sector is witnessing a major boost in indigenous technology, with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) securing a ₹2,463 crore contract from the Ministry of Defence. The agreement involves the supply and maintenance of Ashwini Radars, which will enhance the Indian Air Force’s air surveillance capabilities.

BEL, a Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), has developed these advanced radars in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The Ashwini Radars are fully indigenous Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) systems, designed to track and detect various aerial threats, from fighter jets to slow-moving targets.

These radars come with Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) systems, allowing them to distinguish between friendly and enemy aircraft. They also feature electronic scanning in multiple directions, ensuring accurate 4D surveillance. Another key advantage of the Ashwini Radars is their Electronic Counter-Countermeasures (ECCM) capability, which helps them function effectively even in hostile electronic warfare environments.

Being highly mobile, these radars can be easily deployed across different terrains, making them a valuable addition to India’s defence infrastructure. This deal reinforces BEL’s role as a leading defence supplier and contributes to India’s push for self-reliance in military technology.

With this new order, BEL’s total order inflow for the current financial year has reached ₹17,030 crore. The company has been actively securing new contracts, including ₹843 crore worth of fresh orders this Monday for RF seekers, radar upgrades, vessel and air traffic management systems, and repair services.

As India continues to modernize its defence capabilities, BEL’s growing role in developing and supplying indigenous technology highlights its critical contribution to national security. The latest contract ensures that India’s Air Force remains equipped with cutting-edge radar systems, enhancing surveillance, tracking, and overall defence readiness.
