On July 7, 2025, former U.S. President Donald Trump posted on social media platform X that countries supporting BRICS will face an extra 10% tax on exports to the U.S. He said this will apply to all such countries, with no exceptions.
Trump was reacting to a new BRICS statement — a 31-page document — where the group spoke out against high tariffs (taxes on imports) and military actions, especially those involving Iran. While they did not name the United States, Trump believed it was aimed at the U.S. and responded strongly.
BRICS is a group of major countries that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. It has now expanded to include Indonesia, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). These countries are working together on trade and currency issues, and have become a powerful global group.
In their statement, BRICS said the U.S. tariffs are not fair and go against global trade rules set by the World Trade Organization (WTO). They warned that these actions could hurt world trade, slow down supply chains, and create more uncertainty for businesses.
This isn’t the first time Trump has made such threats. Earlier, he had warned of 100% tariffs on countries that try to replace the U.S. dollar with a BRICS-led currency. Trump sees these efforts as a way to weaken America’s role in the world economy.
Many people now think this could lead to a trade fight between the U.S. and BRICS. If the U.S. adds this extra 10% tax, it could raise prices on goods, affect businesses, and make the global economy more unstable.
