Tesla officially entered the Indian market on July 15, 2025, with the launch of its Model Y SUV at a base price of $69,770 (approx 60 lakh). The debut coincided with the opening of Tesla’s first Indian showroom in Mumbai’s premium Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC).

The Model Y’s pricing represents a significant markup compared to its global pricing—largely due to India’s high import duties, as the vehicle is currently being shipped from Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory. According to Isabel Fan, Tesla’s Director for Southeast Asia, the company is “testing the waters” in the Indian luxury EV market before committing to deeper investment or local production.

Tesla’s initial strategy is clearly conservative but calculated. With no local manufacturing planned yet, the brand is using a fully imported model to gauge Indian consumer appetite for high-end electric vehicles. The price tag positions the Model Y as a premium EV, competing not just with other electric options, but also with luxury ICE SUVs.

Tesla’s next step will be opening a second showroom in New Delhi, which, along with Mumbai, will serve as a litmus test for how India’s urban elite respond to the brand.

India’s EV market is still developing, with most growth coming in the two-wheeler and budget four-wheeler segments. But as EV infrastructure improves and consumer awareness increases, Tesla aims to establish an early brand presence, even if only in small volumes for now.

The Model Y offers Indian buyers a taste of the Tesla experience, including its minimalist design, high-tech interface, and strong performance metrics. But for the average Indian buyer, the price tag remains out of reach, something Tesla appears fully aware of as it positions this launch as an exploratory move.
