Flipkart is planning a massive expansion by setting up 500 to 550 new dark stores before its biggest sales event, the Big Billion Days. Currently, Flipkart has around 300 such stores and aims to reach its target by March. This expansion puts it in direct competition with Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart, which have been leading the segment.

With Walmart backing its plans, Flipkart is gearing up to take on the quick commerce market aggressively. The goal is to focus on densely populated areas where demand is high, ensuring ultra-fast deliveries within 15 to 20 minutes. Unlike grocery-heavy platforms, Flipkart is eyeing high-value products such as electronics, appliances, and smartphones, making its strategy stand out from the rest.

Competitors have already established a stronghold in the industry. Blinkit operates over 1,000 dark stores, while Zepto has taken nearly two years to build a network of 700 stores. Flipkart, however, is looking to scale much faster and catch up in record time. By FY27, the quick commerce segment is expected to contribute up to 2.4% of the total retail market, with a projected gross merchandise value (GMV) of ₹31,000 crore.

The space is becoming increasingly competitive, with companies pouring money into marketing, customer acquisition, and heavy discounts to attract users. Operational efficiency and a strong delivery network are key factors that will determine success. Flipkart is not just expanding its dark stores but also focusing on monetizing them through delivery partnerships and special promotions.
